Brave heart: Kate Beckinsale

Kate Beckinsale's icy thrillers heat up the big screen this spring

By Noreen Flanagan

Although she and her husband - director Len Wiseman - call Los Angeles home, Beckinsale says that their itinerant lifestyle has instilled a Zen like detachment from possessions in her. "I'd be bummed like crazy if I lost my wedding ring or photo albums of my daughter as a baby, but beyond that I can pretty much live without anything," she says. "There are whole houses of mine in storage and I don't know where anything is. I've had to detach from that as being important. As long as I have my people with me, I'm okay."

Both her parents were actors, so Beckinsale had an understanding of show business long before she landed her first big role in the 1993 film Much Ado About Nothing. She was studying French and Russian literature at the University of Oxford at the time but left to pursue acting. Roles in other movies, such as Cold Comfort Farm and The Last Days of Disco, soon followed, but it was her star turn in Pearl Harbor in 2001 that heralded her American debut. After playing a sexy vampire in Underworld (2003) and Underworld: Evolution (2006), Beckinsale gained a cult following and a regular spot on Maxim's Hot 100 list.

While Beckinsale has played many characters, her portrayal of the sultry and fiery Ava Gardner in The Aviator most closely reflects her true nature. Despite her refined looks and posh British lilt, Beckinsale is known for being spirited (she reportedly once urinated in a director's tea following a disagreement about a nude scene), and her language is unexpectedly salty. It's this robust nature, as well as the lessons she learned from her parents, that she feels prepared her most for life in the celebrity spotlight. "You grow up with a sense that it's normal for people to take a slightly unhealthy interest in your family and in you," she explains. "It may have helped me adjust to fame because I didn't suddenly become famous and go crazy and hire male strippers and do lots of cocaine."

That doesn't mean she's indifferent to the nasty barbs that bloggers have posted about her child, her marriage and her body. If she is offended by such comments, Beckinsale says that her husband tells her to ignore them because they come from disgruntled teens. "I don't know if they do, but it helps to picture them as spotty 12-year-olds," she says. "You also get to a point where you're just too fucking tired to care. I'm so busy thinking about my child and worrying about how she's coping with math - or this and that - that if someone thinks I have a funny-shaped ass, well, I couldn't care less. As long as my husband has a smile on his face, it's fine with me."
