In my younger days, my relationship with bags used to be fun and carefree: short-term commitments with minimal emotional and monetary investment. This changed the day I met Kooba. Her name was Sienna (picture to the left) and I had never gazed upon anything so beautiful. Boasting smooth cowhide, whipstitched handles and unique brass hardware, the look was sturdy yet carefree, simple but classic. At $725, Sienna was clearly out of my league, but I'd visit her at Holt's every week to stroke her longingly and profess my undying love. Then one day, my boyfriend surprised me with her lovely form. Sienna was finally mine! And once I was a member of the over-$500 handbag club, there was no looking back.
They call marijuana a gateway drug, a term used to describe a relatively benign substance that can lead to the use of more dangerous drugs. Although somewhat contentious, the term is helpful in defining my purse addiction. Kooba was my first "gateway purse," the label responsible for my taste for the finer things. Soon after, I found myself acquiring a small army of Koobas with a passion that some might deem an obsession, even an affliction. And in trying to control this addiction, there have been casualties: handbags that have called out to me that I've cruelly turned my back on, only to be truly sorry in their absence.
Consider the plight of the Botkier Skeleton bag (picture to the left). It appeared late one night while I was perusing my cache of online shopping sites, lovingly referred to by friends as "my purse porn." I had never cheated on Kooba, but this unique creature had me intrigued. Alas, after a particularly hardcore month of new handbag relationships, I simply had no room in my life for a new commitment and gave the Skeleton bag the brush off. This ultimately resulted in a lifetime of regret, as this exotic beauty was never to be seen or heard from again.
