Going for Baroque

Bring on the drama! Fall accessories are anything but demure.

By Anita Gatto

Fashionistas everywhere are turning to baroque style for exaggerated essentials and amusing accessories that make the look of the season one to applaud. From sky-high rockstar pumps to the perfect tote bag heavy on ornamentation, international designers were using a decidedly more masuline approach in designing their accessories collections.

"The theme (Baroque) is a big trend right now because of our love affair with nostalgia and our curiosity with Marie Antoinette and Sophia Coppola's modern day portrayal of this iconic female," comments Barbara Atkin, Fashion Director of Holt Renfrew.

To achieve high-fashion appeal, check out ELLE's favourites for bringing on the baroque!

The crowd pleasers:

1. The dramatic handbag
Look for combinations of details, such as woven straw or gorgeous embroidery, as seen in this sumptuous Valentino handbag, ($2190) "Valentino, Givenchy, Dolce & Gabbana are key examples of designers that use the baroque theme for Fall/Winter 2006," adds Atkin.

2. Sequined stilettos
Expect a standing ovation with pumps that shine all the way to the back row! Let your feet guide you with intricate beading, mesh and metallic details. Turn to the dazzling Rene Caovilla beaded sling-back, ($1095) for inspiration. If investing in footwear is not in your financial script, turn to Spring by Transit shoes ($49.99) for a theatrical version of the hot trend; gold sequined covered pumps with a metallic bow placed at the open-toe makes for a picture perfect look with affordable benefits.

3. Cinched belt
"Draw from historical reference," says Atkin. An empire belt with a ultra-feminine jeweled flower is a direct nod to the past with a touch of royal glamour. Holt Renfrew's choice (shown, $450) is so sweet! Desirable over a sharp power blazer or try adding it to your classic little black dress for a touch of trend.

4. Roped details
A boyish detail that gives a strong impact. Opt for ones with a touch of gold trimming to up the glam factor. Spring by Transit presents a leather bag styled with sturdy rope and tassel details that encourage the look of the past with present fashion. (Bag; Spring by Transit $34.99)

5. Lace
From lace peep-toes adorned with jewels to lace embraced clutches, lace can be a real statement of embellishment when done the right way -- No Britney Spears please! Think small and tasteful lace which will romanticize your winter look the right way. (Clutch; Spring by Transit $19.99)

6. Ravishing ribbon
Smooth and stylish, ribbons create a fantasy look that swepts style away to another time period. Tie on a necklace with loads of detailed charms, such as Betsey Johnson's latest creation!
