I recently had a facial and had a major breakout a day or two after. Why does this happen and how can I avoid it the next time?

A facial is a nice way to treat your face and is a great way to improve the overall appearance of your skin. But sometimes the phrase "no pain, no gain" applies to facials and you could be left red-in-the-face after. We asked Toronto-based dermatologist Dr. Benjamin Barankin why this sometimes happens.

Some people do break out after a facial and its thought to be related to some of the stress and increased inflammation that are due to excessive rubbing and scrubbing of the face. Sometimes, the facial coincides with your period which means your hormones are more likely to blame. I would ask that your facial be made more gentle, and it is useful to use a medicated acne cream from your dermatologist for 3 days before and 3 days after your facial to prevent a flare up.
