Arch angel: 3 steps to perfect brows

Frame your face with shapely, sophisto brows.

By Michell Villett

"The eyebrow is the single most important - and under estimated - feature on the face,” says California-based brow guru Damone Roberts. Best known as the resident makeup artist on TLC's 10 Years Younger, Roberts has groomed the arches of Madonna, Beyoncé and Cameron Diaz and recently introduced his eponymous line of brow tools and cosmetics in Canada. Here are his tips on how to get (and maintain) the perfect shape.

1. Fine form
When determining the right shape for your face, err on the side of fullness. "The thicker the brow, the younger and prettier a woman tends to look," says Roberts. To find out where the brow should start, hold a pencil vertically against the side of your nose. To locate the arch, tilt it so that it aligns with the outer edge of the iris. To see where the brow should end, line up the pencil with the outer edge of the eye and the nostril.

2. Pluck stop
"Tweeze underneath the brows in the direction that the hair is growing," says Roberts. Work slowly so you don't remove too much-over-tweezing is the biggest mistake women make, he says. Good tweezers also make a difference. "Use a good-quality pair with a slanted tip that can really grasp the hair by the root."

3. Finish line
Filling in the arches with a pencil or powder can make them look even better, says Roberts-but use products made specifically for the brows, not the eyelids. "Apply brow powder with an angled brush. If you're using a pencil, use a light feathering technique." Choosing the right shade is important too. "Dark hair looks best with brows that are one or two shades lighter," says Roberts. "Blondes can look washed out, so their brows should be one or two shades darker."
