Size matters

When it comes to fall hairstyles, the bigger, the better!

By Vanessa Milne

The curl
In attempting Kate Hudson or Angelina Jolie's flowing curls, a simple, retro tool is key: the Velcro roller. According to Marc, Velcro rollers are the "hottest tool for fall." Pick a roller that you can wrap your hair around several times – we're thinking curls, not just volume. Start with nearly dry hair, randomly wrap rollers in it, wait ten to 15 minutes, and then remove them and run your fingers through. That's it! Accessorize with a headband if you want. For added gloss and protection, use root-lifting foam and finish with a drop of moisture gloss. The roller will stretch out natural curls or add curl to straight hair, so it's very flexible. "Whether [hair is] straight, curly, fine or coarse, you're going to get the look – as long as it's not too short," says Marc. If you have short hair, you can still achieve the look -- just use smaller rollers and lightly style with your fingers to keep the lift.

Little black dress hair
Compared to last year's half-up casual styles, dress-up hair is now sophisticated. “We're going to see the return of buns, chignons, more sleek style evening wear,” says Marc. He recommends you part your hair to the side, fix it in a bun or chignon in either the lower nape area or the crown, and then accessorize with the ornamental clips, pins and barrettes that are popular this fall.

The wrong way
Don't
overdo it on the accessories. Wearing bold clips during the day or too many baubles at night can look tacky.
Don't think just because you're looking for volume and your hair is fine, you can skip conditioner or should use a 2-in-1. Shampoo will clean the conditioner out of your hair, so you need to condition last, as a separate step. If you're worried, use a volumizing conditioner designed for fine hair.
Don't go crazy with layers. Cutting short layers into your hair might give you a face-framing look in the mirror, but from the sides and back they often just look choppy.
