Runway beauty: Braids

Find out how to copy the latest hair trends at home!

Women such as Bo Derek and Alanis Morisssette know the appeal of woven tresses. "Braids are fresh and girlie, but also very versatile," says Derek Selby, director of training and development at Schwarzkopf Professional. "They can be classic, youthful, whimsical or sophisticated."

For a new twist, try a halo-effect coif. Start with freshly washed hair and add gel for hold, then blow-dry. Apply a smoothing serum to tame fly-aways and boost shine.

Pick up a tiny section of hair at the right temple, just back from the hairline. French braid the hair sideways across the opposite temple, leaving a few wisps in front. Selby recommends that you "incorporate the braid end into the rest of your 'do, be it a chignon, bun or ponytail."
