Beauty news: Blushing for spring

What's hot this month? ELLE's editors pick the best of the beauty crop.

By Stefanie Polsinelli

What is it?
Two rarefied worlds -- the patience-testing world of French winemaking and the hypercompetitive, market-driven world of the beauty industry -- collide in L'Or de Vie, the new skin-care offering from Christian Dior.

What does it do?
Wine connoisseurs know that vintages from Château d'Yquem, a combination of the hand-picked Sémillon and Sauvignon grapes, typically rank 100/100 in Wine Spectator. Now, scientists at Dior have discovered that the Bordeaux vines grown in this unique and fertile terroir-the French speak about terroir, or the soil and climate that give wine its distinctive taste, with a quasi-religious fervour -- contain 10 potent molecules that can be used to repair both the epidermis and dermis.

How does it work?
One of the distinguishing characteristics of Château d'Yquem wines is their longevity: they can be cellared for over a century without losing their appeal. The same wine-producing vines that once assuaged the thirst of Thomas Jefferson and George Washington are now providing the likes of Celine Dion and Heather Locklear (both of whom are on the waiting list for the limited quantities of L'Or de Vie) a different kind of pleasure.

Ask a derm
Q. Should extractions be part of a facial? If not, what do I do about my blackheads?

A. "Most derms disapprove of extractions because they are often not done well and can cause infections, epidermal cysts and scarring," says Dr. Lisa Kellett of DLK On Avenue (www.dlkonavenue.com). "Studies show that extractions are fruitless because 36 hours after blackheads are removed, the hair follicles in which they form fill up again with oil. Avoid the need for extractions by using cleansers and moisturizers that remove excess oil from the skin. Products that contain vitamin A are especially good for this. A professional Intense Pulsed Light treatment will tighten the collagen around the follicle, creating a smaller orifice that will hold less oil. If you already have blackheads, a derm can perform a gentle diamond peel or micro-dermabrasion treatment to clean out the sebum."
