Laser quest: High-tech body-slimming solutions

Biotherm's new body-slimming system fights cellulite the high-tech way.

By Michelle Villett

Forget about a genie in a bottle; how about a laser in a bottle? That's the premise of Celluli Laser, Biotherm's new anti-cellulite line, which promises smooth, bikini-ready skin without any pain or recovery time - or even leaving the house. "Lasers are able to break down fat cells quickly," says Dr. Lucien Aubert, director of Biotherm's research labs in Monaco. "The action of this product is like the effect of a laser on the skin."

Professional laser treatments work by targeting the skin's collagen fibres. "The cells that store fat are surrounded by collagen," says Dr. Philippe Blanchemaison, a vascular-medicine specialist at the University of Paris. After loosening collagen, the laser moves on to liquefying stores of fat. But with professional treatments, you have to burn off cellulite afterwards with exercise, says Blanchemaison. Most people need two or three laser treatments, and you may need follow-up sessions every three months.

Enter the Celluli Laser system, which comprises an exfoliating scrub, cream and massage tool. The line's star ingredient is a peptide complex called biofibrine that helps stop glycation - one of the major causes of cellulite. "Glycation is a normal process that occurs when glucose and protein molecules combine," says Blanchemaison. "It hardens collagen fibres and thickens the fat cells inside them." Biofibrine targets the stiffened collagen, helping to dislodge even the most stubborn pockets of cellulite.

But topical ingredients are only part of the strategy. "Some women don't have excess fat, but they have cellulite because of water retention," says Aubert. The exfoliating scrub and massage device help stimulate circulation and warm up the skin. "This increase in skin temperature causes the product to penetrate faster," explains Aubert.

So, how do the results compare to professional ones? "The action is not as quick or as strong as a medical device," concedes Aubert, "but you can see results after just 10 days." In fact, Celluli Laser has inspired Biotherm to stay on the high-tech highway. “We want to develop more targeted products," says Aubert. "Technology is giving us a new way of understanding cellulite and finding solutions."

Smooth movesTips to help keep dimpled skin at bay.
• Avoid sugar, which triggers the glycation process and causes cellulite.
• Exercise to increase circulation and prevent fluid buildup.
• Exfoliate to stimulate circulation and smooth skin.
• Camouflage with a self-tanner: Cellulite is less noticeable on darker skin.
